The Goldfish brand has announced the launch of its first gluten-free Smile Cheddar crackers, marking a further move by major food companies to extend core brands to consumers with dietary restrictions. The product, launched by The Campbell's Company, Goldfish's parent company, is planned to hit shelves at retailers nationwide in November. According to the company, this is one of the most frequently requested innovations in the brand's history.

"We've heard from many families who love Goldfish crackers but can't always enjoy them together, and those voices have stayed with us," said Tiphanie Maronta, Senior Vice President of Goldfish crackers, in a statement. "We wanted to take the time to ensure every detail—from taste and texture to the iconic shape—stays true to the Goldfish brand."

According to data from Market Research Future, cited by The Campbell's Company, about 30% of the U.S. population actively seeks gluten-free food options. Additionally, data from Innova Market Insights shows that 16% of consumers globally have purchased products targeting specific dietary conditions, highlighting the growing demand for customized innovation.

As more consumers focus on health and wellness, snack giants are rolling out healthier, more targeted innovations. Earlier this year, Mars Incorporated launched a gluten-free version of its Cheez-It crackers, which the company said was also a highly requested innovation.

Goldfish's new product launch comes as its parent company, The Campbell's Company, places the brand at the core of turning around its snacking business. Company executives said during a June earnings call that the brand has stabilized after earlier declines, but sales are still down 1% to 2%. Todd Cunfer, CFO of The Campbell's Company, said the brand will play a "critical" role in improving profit margins, noting that Goldfish is "the largest and most profitable part of the snacking portfolio."

Mick Beekhuizen, CEO of The Campbell's Company, said part of the strategy to revitalize Goldfish is launching larger, more impactful innovations rather than "a lot of small innovations." "We will invest more in certain innovations and ensure they are fully supported to truly make a difference for the brand," Beekhuizen said.

The Campbell's Company said the gluten-free Goldfish crackers will retain the classic smile shape and emphasized that they will match the original products in taste and texture. The company did not disclose specific recipe adjustments but said the product has received gluten-free certification.

Industry analysts noted that this move reflects the continued growth of the "gluten-free" segment in the snack market. According to Grand View Research, the global gluten-free product market was valued at approximately $6.5 billion in 2023 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 8.5% from 2024 to 2030. The Campbell's Company did not provide sales expectations for the new product but said it will invest marketing resources to support the launch.

Notably, the launch of Goldfish gluten-free crackers coincides with the U.S. fall snacking peak season. The company plans to complete nationwide distribution by November and will sell the product through online channels simultaneously. Consumers can purchase it via the Goldfish brand website and major e-commerce platforms.

The Campbell's Company also said it may consider expanding gluten-free options to other Goldfish product lines in the future based on consumer feedback, but no specific timeline has been announced yet.
